Noah Carson married a spoiled girl named Susannah from Connecticut when he was just 20 and she a mere 18. First bad mistake: neither one of them was prepared for the challenge. He is resourceful, though, and immediately sets about to make a living for them. Loving the shipbuilding business, he and his best friend form a partnership and begin building boats, quickly earning a reputation for finely crafted, fast, sleek designs. In time, Noah and his wife’s first baby, a son, comes along. The business flourishes, and the money starts to flow. At the same time, his wife is not a good mother, always pawning her child off on her mother, her sister, or the neighbor woman, anyone willing to watch him. She longs to live the high life; thus, she jumps headlong into spending money, playing tennis, joining social clubs, and attending charity luncheons. When Noah’s at home, his primary responsibility is for the child because his wife claims fatigue, ill health, and basic disinterest. She is a self-absorbed, narcissistic, undisciplined, unreliable, and an overindulged child. To top matters, she is beautiful, charming, and flirtatious, a terrible combination in light of her ever roving eye. Unbeknownst to Noah, at the peak of their boatbuilding business, Susannah and his partner are caught in an extramarital affair, the discovery of which will not only rock his business, church, and community, but his own sense of trust. He could almost believe it of his wife–but his best friend? The notion of divorce is not only scandalous but inevitable, and the court fights ugly. Susannah wants all of Noah’s assets, as does his partner, but when she files for full custody of their son, Toby, Noah draws the line. She knows he will draw the line there, too, so she uses her own son as the trump card. “You surrender the business and your assets to me, and you can have full custody of the boy,” she says. He takes the deal and runs, thankful he got the one thing that truly mattered from the marriage, his son.

His uncle invites him to join him in his window/door business, and needing to escape the memories and scandal of a failed marriage, he jumps at the chance to put his life behind him and start anew. Thus, he flees CT and comes to West Michigan where he vows to keep his nose out of everyone else’s business, work hard, support his boy, and tuck away his dreams for building boats, never mind that he still carries his trusty notebook in his hip pocket, which he pulls out every now and then to tweak a line of the boat he’s designing. It’s the one thing he brought away from the business that his partner never saw–an innovative sailboat plan unlike any other. Built to proper specifications, he’s convinced it will sail faster than anything else on the water.

As the story progresses, he meets a wealthy man living on the lake who earned his money in the logging industry and smart investments. He hires Noah to replace some windows and doors and over the course of his days on the job, the man inquires as to Noah’s prior profession. Eventually he shows the fellow his boat drawing. One thing leads to another, and the man puts up the money to build the boat in one of his empty buildings down by the waterfront with high hopes for winning the Regatta from Milwaukee to Sandy Shores, a 115 mile trek across Lake Michigan. It’s like a dream come true. Naturally, his boat with the sleek design and single rudder comes out the clear winner, after which the wealthy man puts up the money for Noah to start a shipbuilding company near the harbor. Thus, he’s back in the boat business.

Almost as soon as Noah leaves Connecticut, his partner’s business starts failing due to his own poor management–Noah was the brains behind the business–losing trusted clientele and personnel–and, of course, the collapse of his marriage to Noah’s ex-wife. Certain she can waltz back into Noah’s life and resume TRYING to be a mommy to their son and a wife to him, she is shocked to discover he wants nothing to do with her. By now, he has definite eyes for Abbie Ann, the girl running The Whatnot, the family-owned general store in town, even though another man has started courting her as well. Abbie is wary of Noah and for good reason; he has a “colorful” past, and her father warns her it’s probably best not to become involved with a divorced man, no matter that he is a Christian. And now with his former wife making waves in Sandy Shores, it is even more reason to stay clear of him. Besides, Abbie’s involvement in the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and her volunteer work with the elderly keep her too busy to consider matters of love.

Of course, God will have His own agenda, and Noah and Abbie will soon discover the futility of running away from God’s perfect plan–even when it seems an unlikely one.
