In 2006 I signed my first book contract so that means that this year, I’ve been writing professionally for 20 years. I’m thrilled to share that DEADLY CURRENTS is my 65^th book.

Here’s what it’s about.

Investigative journalist Cressida Dane arrives in Hidden Bay after a worldwide journey to finish her late father’s manuscript on shipwrecks. As she tries to discover the story behind the “ghost ship” Specter’s Bounty, her only lead is a name her father left behind–Evelyn Monroe. As Cressida uncovers more about the ship, she quickly realizes that her research has placed her in the crosshairs of dangerous forces. County detective Braden Sanders is in Hidden Bay for one reason–to get his niece lifesaving medical treatment. To do that, he is assigned to protect Cressida from a revenge-driven enemy. Together, Braden and Cressida dig deeper to discern the myth from the facts surrounding the Specter’s Bounty.

The ghost ship wasn’t even on my writing radar when I first began writing the Hidden Bay series . . .

THE GHOST SHIP AT THE HEART OF DEADLY CURRENTS.

I’ve always loved atmospheric settings, especially along the Pacific Northwest coast (where I live!), where fog clings to rocky shores and storms roll in fast, and sometimes, there is just too much rain. Ha! But the rain adds to what I think is the perfect backdrop for a romantic suspense series.

Add in a ghost ship and that bumps up the creep factor and intrigue. Wouldn’t you agree that even the phrase “ghost ship” stirs up your imagination—fog, dark water, unanswered questions, and a vessel with a past no one can fully explain? Are ghost ships only legend? Not at all. Throughout history, abandoned and drifting ships have been found at sea, sometimes with no crew, no clear explanation, and no easy answers. Naturally, that kind of mystery is irresistible to a suspense writer.

So I had to put one in my Hidden Bay series—just a mention about Specter’s Bounty in book one (Storm Warning) to add some fun and intrigue to that first story, though I hadn’t intended to expand on it. But by book three, Deadly Currents, the ghost ship mystery had been drifting through my mind in and out of the fog (see what I did there?) for two whole books, and I knew it was time to explore that story and find the answers.

The sea never gives back what it claims . . .Cressida is remembering these words her father said as she works to finish his book about shipwrecks and ghost ships.

The past is never truly gone. Sometimes it waits along a foggy coast.
