WELCOME! I’m Elizabeth Goddard (my friends call me Beth) and I love reading and writing romantic suspense, which is a good thing since I write romantic suspense for two publishers (Harlequin Love Inspired Suspense and Revell). Feel free to learn more about me here at my site. You can also join me on my Facebook page, Twitter, Instagram and more.

My newest romantic suspense release is Always Look Twice. Here’s the blurb:

At the advice of her therapist, homicide survivor Harper Reynolds has traded her job as a crime scene photographer for a more peaceful life taking photographs of the natural world. But her hopes for a life surrounded by the serenity of the outdoors are dashed when she inadvertently captures a murder being committed in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She flees the scene in fear–and loses the camera. Former Green Beret Heath McKade is a reserve deputy in an understaffed county who has been called in to protect Harper, a childhood friend he is surprised to see back in the area. When Harper learns that the sheriff’s department can’t find any evidence of the murder she witnessed, she is determined to do what she can to see that justice is done. What neither Harper nor Heath could know is how many explosive secrets from the past will be exposed–or how deeply they will fall for each other.

In this suspenseful page-turner, bestselling author Elizabeth Goddard keeps you on the edge of your seat as you discover that uncommon justice lies just on the other side of fear.

On the other side of fear . . .

Is a worthy villain just waiting to be brought to justice. Ha! Now. . . how did I come up with that villain?

CREATING A WORTHY VILLAIN

Creating a villain worthy to be pitted against a great protagonist and, in case of a romantic suspense, worthy of both the hero and the heroine, requires careful planning. Or . . . sometimes just a random idea popping into one’s head.

The plot for Always Look Twice grew from one scene.

I only had a blurb from which to write an entire novel and had no real idea about the plot. But one day a scene popped into my head– I envisioned a hunter looking at a herd of buffalo through the high-powered scope of his custom made rifle.

From my Wyoming research trip!

Only he wasn’t actually aiming to shoot an animal. Through his scope, he was watching a woman. Oh, he was hunting all right. Just not wild animals.

And my heroine saw the hunter through her camera.

Who was this hunter/killer and why did he murder someone? I developed the villain as I wrote, and then one day I had a creative epiphany—I knew the killer. I started researching about similar criminals in the news. And here’s the creepy part. As I settled on one specific criminal (who shall go unnamed here) I was sitting at a big university campus. I started reading about this particular criminal—the model for my villain, if you will—and as it turned out, the criminal actually graduated at the university from where I was researching! That was totally random. Cold chills crawled over me. Seriously. That was the moment I knew that I was on the right track.

To paraphrase one Always Look Twice reviewer, the villain was extremely unique, and she both hated him and liked him. I think you’ll agree if you get the chance to read Always Look Twice.
